The best tramezzini in town
Vusumuzi Ntuli, inspired by some of Durban’s trendy restaurants, has created his own café In the heart of KwaMashu. Vusumuzi, who grew up learning to cook in the family home, proudly serves “the best tramezzini” in town. His chicken wings are also highly sought after.
But he “loves nothing fancy” and that is in keeping with his open plan, street-side café which offers everything from burgers, platters and cappuccinos to the traditional ShisaInyama. Fashion Café is particularly popular on Sunday when his “good Sunday Chicken” is accompanied by local music.
Fashion Café, in the middle of a residential area in the township (now more like a Durban suburb), has a fairly low-key look from the outside but this jaunty restaurant is filled with old cameras, musical instruments and random memorabilia and has a homely, pleasant atmosphere with a quirky twist.
Vusumuzi Ntuli founded Fashion Café on his mother’s property in 2001 and he still runs it now as the chef, barman and manager. In spite of the heavy demands of the various jobs, he is friendly and chatty and obviously exceptionally proud of his establishment…and his fresh beef tremazzini.
The Fashion Cafe is certainly worth a visit, not only for the simple tasty food but also for an authentic experience of township life.
